Hey folks,
The House passed a bill that will allow cities to opt into even-year elections. Please use this easy form to send a letter to the Democratic Senators that are sitting on the fence to make sure it passes. It takes a few seconds and they will all get your letter!
Our state Rep. in the 46th, Darya Farivar, was a leader in getting this on the agenda. Now it’s the Senate’s turn, where 46th district Senator Javier Valdez is also a leading sponsor. A big thanks to both of them!
In the House, all the Republicans voted against it, as well as a few Democrats, but it did pass. It faces a tougher climb in the Senate.
As Sightline has shown, our odd year elections crush turnout. In fact, our recent odd year election had the lowest in a century–a sad state of affairs in representative democracy.
There are people working tirelessly to undermine this, and of course they are the folks like Sara Nelson whose electoral prospects are boosted when young people, renters, and people of color do not turn out.
Please take two minutes and send this letter to the Senators that seem to be sitting on the fence. Feel free to customize it, or just send it on as is. If you have any connection to anyone in any of their offices, please write to them or call them.
And please share this letter with others around the state.
We have to act quickly to make sure Republicans do not convince these Democrats to help them kill this bill.
Many thanks,
Ron
